Installation of the Autotain 9" digital DVD headrest in the Grand Cherokee is pretty simple. I used the stock 10mm posts already installed on the headrest. I think Jeep uses a slightly larger diameter post because the headrest springs do not catch the notches tight enough to use them, but the 12mm posts do not fit. Pushing the wires down the seat was a simple. The back of the seat is open inside, so the wires fall right down back and are easily reachable once you undo the “J” channels that holds the seat together. Little tip here: tilt the seat all the way forward to gain access to the “J” channel easier. I took power through the center console and spliced into the constant 12v cigarette lighter wires. I ran the power wires back to an ON/OFF switch in the backside of the center console. This way, my son can watch movies without needing the car keys. As with most newer cars these days, they have a low power shut-off system, so you should never kill the battery using an power accessory.
My jeep has an in-dash DVD player so I used the video signal from that to play on the headrests. I found the audio coming from the in-dash DVD player to be a little cleaner than the FM transmitter signal. I would say the FM audio quality is no different that my wife’s Ipod FM transmitter unit or you regular radio though and I think you will be pleased with it.
Video quality is superb. Its much better than either of the portable units we own. I have used the headrest DVD player a couple time to see if it skipped on rough roads or railroad tracks and so far it has been good about it. The DVD "Resume" function is really nice. This allows you to pick up at the same place you left a movie, even if you pull it out of the headrest. The game disc is pretty straight forward and easy to use. Game quality is good.
If you have a Jeep with the dark slate gray leather interior, I do not think you are going to find a closer color match without going to an expensive custom headrest. The black is extremely close. With the flap closed, it looks like a stock headrest which I find to be a great security feature. The only noticeable difference in color is in very bright light. The jeep leather has more shine to it and the slate color shows in that shine. In average daylight, as you can see in my pictures, you can not see it. Drop an email to the guys at Onfair and get a color sample to check for yourself.
About the only lower quality item on the headrest I found was the zipper for the flap. To look close to seamless in the headrest, it has to be a small zipper. If you have younger kids, I would open and close it for them just to make sure it does not get yanked off track.
If you are in the market for a DVD headrest system, I don’t think Onfair can be beat. The pricing is great. The quality is there. Installation is a breeze and best of all, customer service is top notch.
So now whats your excuse?
Just a few tips:
--Make sure you check you car for headrest sensors before you order. Its pretty simple, just pull your stock headrest out and start the car. You will get a warning light if you have one. My Jeep did not.
–As mentioned in other reviews, watch the Onfair install videos. Brandon has some great install tips.
–leave the plastic screen protector on until you are finished with install. No reason to accidentally scratch the screen.
–Look online for your vehicle interior assembly manual. Most manufactures have this information found in PDF file format. Jeep uses the MOPAR site for these. I found mine searching for Jeep DVD headrests. Its simply the install instructions for the factory headrest units. It tells you what screws to removes, where clips are, and what order to pull panels off. There is no reason to have trouble installing these or accidentally breaking an interior part.
Thanks
Chris
